Abstract

This study presents Library 2. Cloud computing represents an evolution of Library 2.0 by harnessing cloud computing to advance the services offered by libraries to users. In this study, a mixed-methods approach combining surveys, interviews, and literature reviews was used to describe the framework and components and to assess the advantages and disadvantages. Key cloud computing models—Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)— are increasingly being used by libraries to take advantage of the benefits of cloud computing for cataloguing, digital preservation, user analytics, and resource sharing. The advantages of cloud computing include cost savings, scalability, collaboration, and continuous access. Disadvantages include issues related to privacy and data security, vendor lock-in, and the training needed to accomplish the change. This study also presents real-world case studies to describe the range of outcomes of cloud computing implementation. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for libraries implementing cloud computing in preparation for future-ready, user-centred, and democratized services through cloud-based systems.
