The future of cashless libraries: UPI as a catalyst for Indian smart libraries
Abstract
The transformation of Indian libraries in the digital era is closely aligned with the nation’s broader push towards financial inclusion and a cashless economy. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, has revolutionized the way individuals and institutions conduct financial transactions by providing a simple, secure, and real-time platform. In this context, libraries stand at a critical juncture where integrating UPI can streamline operations, enhance user convenience, and ensure greater transparency in financial processes. This Paper explores the future prospects of UPI integration within Indian smart libraries by adopting a qualitative and descriptive methodology. The study identifies key areas of application, including membership and registration, vendor payments, subscriptions and ONOS-based models, library fines and penalties, donations and fundraising, budgeting and finance, and broader digital transactions. By examining the features and benefits of each application area, the paper highlights how UPI can serve as an enabler of efficiency, accountability, and inclusivity in library management. Additionally, challenges such as cybersecurity risks, digital literacy, and infrastructural gaps are critically discussed. The findings indicate that UPI adoption can significantly strengthen financial sustainability while fostering user-centric, transparent, and smart library ecosystems in India.
