In-vitro cytotoxicity study of catechol derivatives of Semecarpus Anacardium seed against MDA-MB-231 cell line
Abstract
Background: In Ayurveda, an important medicinal plant used as traditional medicines from ancient times known as Semecarpus anacardium L., commonly used as Bhallatak (Marking nut), as member of Anacardiaceae family. In Ayurveda, the nuts have been used to treat variety of medical conditions including common to chronic diseases due to its potential therapeutic agents. However, due to its natural toxic property (skin irritant) the isolation of phytochemical constituents from Semecarpus anacardium nuts remains challenging, and hence, less studied or explored by researchers.Material and Methods: Isolation of phytochemical by Preparative chromatography, Characterization by spectroscopic study and Structural elucidation via NMR revealed that, Semecarpus anacardium seed contain Polyphenolic compounds called as Catechol derivatives i.e Catechol derivative-I and Catechol Derivative-II. The effect of Catechol derivatives of Semecarpus anacardium on cell viability were evaluated by using 3-(4, 5-dimethythiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay method. Results: The present study concluded that, Catechol derivatives of Semecarpus anacardium decreased the cell viability of MDA-MB-231 cell lines. The cytotoxicity of Catechol derivatives of Semecarpus anacardium seed was assessed using Doxorubicin, a well-known anticancer drug, as a reference. Conclusion: The current study revealed that, Catechol derivatives of Semecarpus anacardium effectively reduced MDA-MB-231 cells line, suggest that the seeds may have anticancer activity against MDA-MB-231cell line and may be useful in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
