Enhancing maxillary anterior implant success with guided bone regeneration: A case report
Abstract
Background: Successful implant rehabilitation in the anterior maxilla requires adequate alveolar bone and soft tissue volume to ensure long-term stability and esthetic harmony. Deficiencies in either component may compromise primary stability and impede osseointegration, ultimately affecting the functional and esthetic outcome.Case Presentation: A 19-year-old female presented with discomfort in a previously root canal–treated right maxillary central incisor. Radiographic evaluation revealed a vertical root fracture, necessitating extraction. Socket preservation was performed using a xenograft and a resorbable collagen membrane, followed by a four-month healing period. Cone-beam computed tomography confirmed adequate ridge dimensions for delayed implant placement.Intervention: During implant placement, reduced primary stability was observed due to the presence of fibrous tissue along the buccal aspect. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) was performed using a 1:1 combination of autogenous bone chips and xenograft, covered with a resorbable collagen membrane, and the implant was secured with a cover screw.Outcome: After six months, clinical and radiographic follow-up demonstrated successful osseointegration, stable peri-implant tissues, and improved buccal bone thickness. The site was subsequently restored with a single crown, achieving satisfactory esthetic and functional results. Conclusion: This case illustrates the clinical value of GBR in managing compromised implant stability. The integration of autogenous and xenograft materials, combined with staged healing, supports predictable bone regeneration and enhances anterior maxillary esthetics.
