Delving into the depths: A review of periodontal pocket diagnosis and treatment
Abstract
The periodontal pocket plays a critical role in periodontal disease, exhibiting complex anatomy. It's positioned with tooth on one side, ulcerated epithelium on the other, and junctional epithelium at its base. Due to its difficult-to-reach location, plaque removal within the pocket is challenging. A deep understanding of the aetiology of periodontal pockets is essential for developing effective treatments and preventing disease progression. Periodontal disease diagnosis is based on clinical signs such as gingival bleeding, increased periodontal pocket depths, radiographic evidence of bone loss, and tooth mobility. A structured approach is employed for management, incorporating scaling and root planing, patient education and regular maintenance. Early detection and timely intervention are vital for preventing disease progression and associated complications.
