BIOBANK: A future of biomedical research
Abstract
Biobanks are systematically organized repositories that store human biological samples alongside associated data, such as health records, family history, lifestyle, and genetic information. They play pivotal role in medical research by serving as structured resources for genetic studies, molecular biology, and pharmacogenomics. Biobanks can be of population type, disease specificity, or transdisciplinary research focus. In India, the establishment of biobanks is essential due to its diverse population, which allows for better correlation studies and deeper insights into epidemiology and epigenetics.Furthermore, biobanks are integral to the development of precision medicine, particularly in oncology, where targeted therapies are gaining prominence. This is a very challenging task to set high quality and standardized diagnostic treatment methods for oral cancer. Establishing a biobank would facilitate molecules and genetic cancer research. It will be helpful in primary care and allows clinicians to plan for advanced best individualized treatment. Thus, biobanks play key role in biological science from laboratory investigation to advanced medical application. There are number of challenges faced with respect to biobanks, include lack of awareness among citizens and professionals, financial support or funding, unavailability of electronic health records and dedicated guidelines for governing of the biobanks. Even data confidentiality and security remain a major challenge in biobank management. This paper explores the newly emerging concept of biobank its role in oral cancer as advancing biomedical research.
