Nanocomposite-based delivery systems for flavonoids
Abstract
Flavonoids are polyphenolic chemicals found in plants that have strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. They don’t work very well in medicine, though, because they don’t dissolve well, aren’t absorbed well, and break down quickly. A more stable, regulated-release, and distribution-targeted alternative has emerged: delivery methods based on nanocomposite materials. This paper provides a short introduction to flavonoids and identifies the main problems with traditional distribution methods. It makes the case for using nanocomposite technology-based methods instead. It discusses the basics, benefits, and main techniques for incorporating flavonoids into nanocomposite drug delivery systems. It also discusses possible uses in healthcare and the problems they can cause, such as safety, scalability, and regulatory issues. Finally, emerging approaches such as stimuli-responsive systems and tailored nanomedicine are outlined, demonstrating how flavonoid delivery via nanocomposites could be used in the future.
