Abstract

L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is widely recognised for its roles in disease prevention, complementary medicine, and anti-aging therapy, though scientific validation remains limited. This review highlights vitamin C’s physiological roles and its links to several pathological states, emphasising its potential in promoting healthy aging. Evidence indicates that vitamin C levels correlate with lifespan in animal models, while clinical studies report lower plasma concentrations in older adults compared to younger ones. Reduced vitamin C levels are also noted in age-related disorders such as chronic kidney and obstructive pulmonary diseases, suggesting its involvement in aging-related pathophysiological processes (references as cited).
