Incorporating Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) into the Engineering Technology Program
Abstract
The proper definition and inspection for the accuracy of manufactured products is crucial to ensuring they meet specifications in today's industries. This requirement is particularly vital in our global economy, where measurement errors can lead to costly false fails or false passes. Most products adhere to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Y 14.5M standard on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).Engineering technology graduates specializing in design, manufacturing, or quality control must grasp the principles of measurement science and effectively interpret GD&T-based specifications. From an Engineering Technology perspective focused on practical learning, the development of a GD&T course is pivotal in preparing graduates to meet industry demands. In 2018, a new semester-long GD&T course was introduced in the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) program. The topic of GD&T had been taught in the CAD and Manufacturing courses previously, but there was a minimal amount of coverage on the topic. Here, students apply GD&T theory by inspecting parts to tolerance specifications. They design products, create prototypes, conduct inspections, and present their findings, integrating theory with practical application. This paper outlines the GD&T course's development and implementation within an MET program. It examines student performance in both class and lab settings, captures their feedback, and incorporates input from employers and the Industrial Advisory Board. These insights collectively contribute to refining and enhancing the educational experience.
