Building a Sustainable Future: Innovations and Education in Green Construction
Abstract
Conventional practices in construction processes and management have proven inadequate in addressing unprecedented challenges, particularly concerning carbon emissions. These challenges underscore the imperative for industry practitioners to reconsider and enhance construction processes and technology. This highlights the substantial potential of the construction industry to advance sustainable development by tackling issues related to economic, social, and environmental aspects. The adoption of sustainable construction practices holds promise in reducing overall energy consumption, optimizing the utilization of renewable energy sources, minimizing waste, conserving water resources, improving water quality, incorporating water-sensitive design to mitigate flooding risks, curbing polluting emissions to water, air, and soil, and mitigating noise and light pollution. These are the topics that I cover in "Sustainable Construction" course to prepare our senior students for their future job.A project was embedded into the course to teach students to apply their gained knowledge to design and build a sustainable house with sustainable features. The model homes and its functions were presented at the end of the semester through a competition. They also audit the College building through nine labs using LEED checklist in order to get prepared for the LEED exam which they took at the end of the semester. The final grades show dramatic improvement in students' learning experience by adding the project and labs. The students' evaluation results show how they are better prepared for their job and in order to contribute more to the greener plant. As you know, there is no better way to save our planet than preparing and educating new generation about sustainability.
