Is It Time that We Start to Create Programs and/or Certificates in Climate Technology?
Abstract
Introduction/Background:Most would agree that we live in the modern age of technology during which technology advances have become the norm and appear to be happening at a faster and faster pace.Ever since the advent of the semiconductor-based transistor approximately 75 years ago and the subsequent introduction of the integrated circuit (IC), we have seen a predictable evolution (see Moore's Law) of an increasing number of transistors on a chip.Today, chip capacity has easily broken the barrier of 100s of billions [1] with widespread predictions of ever-increasing capacity into the near future.Certainly, one can easily observe the effect that this sweeping electronics innovation coupled with digital technology has had on society in terms of the commonplace technology used today by the consumer.Smart phones with high-definition (HD) cameras and touch screens, portable computing devices, HD, flat-panel, wide screen, smart TVs, wireless Internet access, etc. are all taken for granted today.Certainly, the applications enabled by the advent of microelectronics and its derivative technologies have affected all aspects of endeavors engaged in by humanity including our entrance into the age of the third industrial revolution during the last century and our present progression into the era of the fourth industrial revolution -Industry 4.0 [2] in this century.During the same time, there has also been an associated increase in scientific inquiry, understanding, and knowledge facilitated by our ability to make more precise measurements, observations, and computations.Along with all this evolving technology has come our ability to globally monitor our changing environment and to ascertain how the long-term use of fossil fuels and a rise in atmospheric CO2 levels has contributed to a negative impact on the stability of the Earth's climate and hence the perceived long-term present and future undesirable effects on the planet's ecosystems and consequentially, humanity itself. In fairly recent times, there has been a concerted effort by many to try and mitigate climate change by employing emerging technologies to provide alternative energy sources and thereby reduce the amount of CO2 released into the planet's atmosphere by
