Augmented Reality Integration in Festo CP Factory: Real-Time Data Visualization via Node-RED and MES4
Abstract
This paper addresses the gap in integrating real-time data with augmented reality for instructional and research purposes in a Festo CP Factory setup. It reviews relevant studies highlighting the potential of augmented reality to improve training, maintenance, and production monitoring but notes their limited focus on comprehensive data visualisation. To overcome this limitation, the paper proposes creating custom augmented reality scenes by developing target markers, three-dimensional objects, and structured configuration files, all integrated through a publicly accessible network directory. A manufacturing execution system database based on Microsoft Access is connected through a Node-RED flow, enabling continuous retrieval of production data. These data are then transmitted to the augmented reality application via a WebSocket interface, allowing real-time display of warehouse occupancy and other key information. The approach has been successfully tested in a pilot scenario for an automatic pallet warehouse, demonstrating ease of setup and rapid data updates. Future implications include broader education implementation, prototyping, industry-focused demonstrations, and potential expansion to additional Festo modules or advanced digital twin solutions.
