Equitable Learning for All: A Case Study of the Implementation and Practice of Inclusive Education Policy in Primary Charter Schools in Dubai
Abstract
A learning atmosphere where every learner possesses equitable opportunities to gain knowledge and develop at his/her own pace, regardless of ethnicity. A diverse environment means the teaching and learning process is tailored to meet everyone’s needs, and no one is left behind. A lot of description could be given to the learning environment where all learners feel included. The importance of involving every learner across the entire process and teaching them how to accept others, respect them, and lift each other up. This case study aims to explore the implementation and practices of the inclusive policy in a primary charter school in Dubai, which has a total of one hundred seven SEN students (special education needs). The data were obtained through two instruments, semi-structured interviews with two participants in different positions, including the school principal and the head of inclusion. The second instrument was observation; two class visits were conducted for core and specialist subjects to observe the teaching and learning procedures and the involvement of children with disabilities. The obtained data from both instruments were transcribed and triangulated with document analysis. The findings of this case study reflect the massive efforts that the primary school is making to establish an equitable, diverse learning atmosphere through the implementation of various innovative techniques and support strategies to empower SEN pupils and prepare them to be effective, productive members of their communities. The case study suggests some future recommendations to accelerate the teaching and learning process.
