Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has led to the widespread adoption of biometric authentication, with fingerprint recognition becoming a standard feature in smartphones due to its convenience and security. However, many users remain unaware of potential vulnerabilities, particularly biometric spoofing, which can compromise personal data and digital identity. This research aims to assess user awareness of smartphone biometric security, evaluate the effectiveness of fingerprint sensors against spoofing attacks, and provide recommendations to enhance biometric protection. A quantitative approach was used, combining a survey of 200 smartphone users in Sepang, Malaysia, with controlled experiments involving eight participants. The survey examined awareness and perception of biometric security, while the experiment tested three common fingerprint sensor types, namely Capacitive, Optical, and Ultrasonic, against five spoofing materials. Findings revealed moderate user awareness, with notable gaps in understanding fingerprint-related risks. Capacitive sensors showed complete resistance to spoofing (100%), while Optical and Ultrasonic sensors exhibited vulnerabilities, with spoofing resistance rates of 50% and 60%, respectively. A moderate negative correlation between user awareness and perception of biometric security was observed, suggesting increased skepticism as users become more informed. These results highlight the need for user education and technological advancements in fingerprint sensor design. The findings also support Malaysia’s National Digital ID initiative by underscoring the importance of secure, trustworthy biometric systems. Future research should explore AI-enhanced and multimodal biometric systems to strengthen mobile authentication security.
