L’appareil génital féminin dans les emblemata medica de Louis de Caseneuve (1626)
Abstract
In our work, we focused on the eighth of the twelve emblems of Louis de Caseneuve, (?-1645), a Jesuit from a bourgeois family in Tournon, entitled Nascentem damna uenantur (Misfortunes strike the one who is born). The first part of the emblem offers a short anatomical lesson on the female reproductive system. This course consists of a detailed examination of engraved figures, which the reader, a young doctor, must interpret by relying on both the interpretive keys gathered in the hieroglyphic figures (hieroglyphica) and the Latin commentary. This emblem thus creates an allegorical scene in which each iconographic element first invites the reader to contemplate the knowledge and then to memorize it.
