Moral Dilemmas among Individuals from three Indigenous groups in the Peruvian Amazon
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify moral dilemmas specific to three Amazonian indigenous cultures, highlighting the universality of the human moral experience while emphasizing that this recognition does not detract from the importance of acknowledging and appreciating our cultural diversity. Participants included four indigenous peoples – three men and one woman – from the Asháninka, Awajún, and Shipibo-Konibo indigenous groups, from the Ucayali region, in Perú. Using a qualitative methodology and taking into account the complex relationship between reason, rationality, and worldview, this study distinguishes between universal and particular elements. It presents examples of dilemmas shared by individuals from the Shipibo-Konibo, Asháninka, and Awajún Indigenous peoples, highlighting their moral concerns related to cultural issues as well as their engagement with universal moral principles.
