Abstract

Amben, an authentic piece of communal furniture traditionally found in Javanese households, is now rarely seen in contemporary houses. This study investigates the declining popularity of amben by analyzing its transformation in shifting form, function, and meaning in Javanese society. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study combines visual content analysis and literature review. Visual data, including drawings, paintings, photographs, and videos, was collected from 1800 to 2025 through digital archives and social media platforms. These were analyzed to trace changes and identify functional alternatives to amben. Textual sources from academic publications, historical reports, and media archives were used to contextualize changes in spatial perception and social values in Javanese society, especially in relation to socio-political developments. Although amben has largely disappeared from everyday use, its communal role persists in reconfigured spatial forms. Similar functions now emerge through built-in features, benches, or flexible seating. This study shows how the communal practices and sociability once embodied by amben continue to evolve within contemporary socio-cultural settings.
