Abstract
This paper investigates from an academic point of view, how Western-style jewelry became ingrained in Japanese society and how it influenced Japanese dress, customs, and culture during the spread of Western-style fashion in postwar Japan. In particular, I focus on the origins of the Vendome Aoyama company and its designs in the form of a case study, due to the importance of its role in the history of jewelry in Japan. This study also examines the reflection of the times by examining specific examples of the kinds of products made and the designs and materials used.Vendome Aoyama’s founder, Yamada Minoru, was quick to identify trends and the needs of the times and continually proposed new models of jewelry. He undoubtedly played an important role in laying the foundation of the jewelry industry. In addition, Minoru’s roots as an ivory craftsman allowed him to create jewelry with an aesthetic that is similar to that of Japanese craftsmen. Thus, he could create jewelry that not only imitated the products of foreign cultures but also easily fit the physiques and fashion sense of the Japanese.
