Abstract

This article examines the role of telecollaboration and ICTs in improving English language learners’ oral skills through video-based learning. A systematic review of articles, conducted using the PRISMA 2020 methodology, reveals trends in the types of virtualexchange and associated technologies that can be used to strengthen oral English skills. The findings are categorized into seven main thematic areas: ICT tools as a prelude to telecollaboration; development of fluency; e-tandem/teletandem and e-pal as models of telecollaboration; intercultural competence; telecollaboration and associated platforms in Colombia; and the role of videos. This review concludes that, in contexts where English is taught as a foreign language, virtual exchange provides an incentive to compensatefor a lack of spaces for face-to-face interaction, positively impacting spoken English. Furthermore, different telecollaboration models integrate linguistic, intercultural, metacognitive and social interaction.
