Abstract

After reviewing the normative guidelines of the Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence program (2019), developed by the Royal Spanish Academy and major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon, this study analyzes the vocabulary of 240 Smart Responses provided by the Gmail platform. These responses were generated from emails sent in Buenos Aires. It adopts a glotopolitical approach, a critical perspective that studies the various social interventions on language. The analysis shows how these technologies propose forms of a ‘general Spanish’ as well as English calques that result in terminology alien to specific Spanish varieties, such as the Rioplatense variety. It also exposes the tension between the elimination of certain prototypical phenomena of the variety (such as voseo) and the use of digital style elements that, although they transgress the standard Spanish norm, seem to converge in economical, attractive and dynamic communication.
