Abstract

In correspondence from the end of the 18th century, through the entire 19th, until the beginning of the 20th century, among letters and postcards containing text, there are some where drawings, interwoven with the text, are an integral part of the message. These images tell what the text does not mention explicitly or does not describe sufficiently, express what words (reaching their limit) cannot, illustrate, imagine, demonstrate the world of the sender, their reflections, creation, emotions, and themselves, introduce elements of fun, fantastic worlds, and various puzzles. These writing-images, constituting epistolographies and skiagraphies of a different kind, compared to exclusively word-based letters, are the subject of this article. It focuses on correspondence from the Romanticism period until the 20th century penned by German (among others: E. T. A. Hoffmann, Clemens Brentano, Bettina von Arnim, Achim von Arnim, Gisela von Arnim, Jacob Grimm, Caspar David Friedrich, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka) and Polish (among others: Adam Mickiewicz, Józef Jeżowski, Artur Grottger, Jacek Malczewski, Cyprian Norwid) poets and writers, as well as painters. Pairing of words and images is visible in manuscripts, but this aspect of correspondence is rarely known to the readers due to the fact that editors typically focus solely on text and remove these elements during pre-printing preparations, considering them unnecessary and ridiculous. Such letters as a whole are also rarely a subject of interest to the researchers. This article is therefore an attempt at an interdisciplinary look at this type of purified correspondence, its shape in the manuscripts and in the editions, its spelling, functions, themes, and the visible relationships between the senders and the recipients.
