„Postaci jak inicjały”. O znaczeniu tekstu, pisma i liter w twórczości Witolda Wojtkiewicza
Abstract
The article analyses the poetics of Witold Wojtkiewicz’s paintings, arguing that their compositional arrangements, stylistic transformations, and techniques derive from strategies and devices characteristic of the textual medium. Wojtkiewicz’s artistic practice originated in applied art – he designed postcards, initials, vignettes, and illustrations, and wrote columns for the satirical magazines. The study demonstrates how his experience in magazine collaboration informed the poetics of his later painting. Particular attention is given to his columns, which reveal a repertoire of stylistic devices, modes of delivery, and compositional structures that anticipate solutions in his visual works. These include narrative strategies such as anecdote, mystery, and dialogue, as well as stylistic devices like repetition, parody, antinomy, and chain or frame constructions. The analysis shows that the same principles shape his painting, where textual procedures are translated into visual form. Finally, the study highlights the initials and inscriptions created by Wojtkiewicz, pointing out their close affinity with the compositional arrangements characteristic of his paintings and drawings, and thereby underscoring the fundamentally textual character of his art.
