March twelfth, 1936
Abstract
This article analyses one of the most impactful attacks on public opinion during the Second Republic, the one committed on the morning of March 12, 1936, against Luis Jiménez de Asúa by four young Falangist militants. This paper seeks to contrast the literature that has focused on the event with the review of the judicial proceedings, as well as its contextualization within the escalation of violence that unfolded during the spring of that same year. Specific aspects of the aggression are being explored along these pages, such as the terrorists’ motive, victim selection, the plot, and its cover-up. It also delves on the idea that the event should be examined from different temporal perspectives, taking into consideration the conjunction of a series of circumstances that can be traced back to the early twenties.
