Abstract

This dataset contains laboratory flume experiment data, granular material property measurements, and compiled river channel data and flume experiment data used to test whether sidewall correction methods for estimating bed shear stress can be generalized to very narrow flumes (width/depth aspect ratios of 0.1–1). It includes: (1) new bed load sediment transport experiments conducted in a 5 cm wide flume at Simon Fraser University using spherical glass beads and natural gravel, with measurements of flow depth, water surface slope, discharge, sediment flux, and velocity profiles; (2) measurements of the granular materials' properties (density, grain shape, angle of repose, settling velocity), including the raw observation photos and videos; (3) raw experimental data from the grain shape study of Deal et al. (2023, Nature); (4) literature compilations of 418 flume sediment transport experiments (Gilbert 1914 via Brownlie 1981; Meyer-Peter & Müller 1948 via Smart 1983; Song 1994 via Guo 2015; Williams 1970); and (5) a compilation of river hydraulic geometry data (width, depth, velocity, slope, discharge, grain size) spanning steep bedrock channels to large alluvial rivers. The dataset is organized in three parts: analysis code (01_code), analysis-ready datasets with data dictionaries (02_data), and an archive of the original raw data in its as-generated file structure (03_original_archive), described in detail in the README. Jupyter notebooks reproduce all analyses and figures of the associated article (no separate figures folder is included), and standalone calculator tools (Python notebooks and Excel spreadsheets) allow others to apply the sidewall and grain shape corrections to their own data. The dataset supports the article "Generalizing sediment transport experiments from narrow flumes to wider channels" and is reusable for studies of bed load transport, flume-scale effects, sidewall corrections, granular materials, and river channel hydraulics.
