The Reception of 『周禮(Zhouli)』 Concepts and Their Political Functions in Baekje during the Ungjin and Sabi Periods
Abstract
This study examines how the ideas and institutional templates associated with the 『周禮』 were perceived, adapted, and mobilized in Baekje during the Sabi period. 『周禮』 provided a discourse and symbolic vocabulary system necessary to reorganize the royal governance system and justify national transformation during the historical transition period of Sabi Cheondo. Based on various evidences on the reorganization of administrative organizations, urban planning, ritual reform, and the improvement of the education system, this study reveals that the similarities between the Baekje system and the 『周禮』 norm were at the functional and ideological level rather than formal imitation. This appropriation process was the result of accumulated ritual recognition, internal factors of the political utility of Confucian studies, and external pressure on the intensification of diplomatic exchange and cultural competition with the Southern Dynasty of China. In particular, the academic genealogy led by scholar Yukhu(陸詡) and his teacher formed a core mediated knowledge network that allowed them to systematically understand the concept of 『周禮』 and reconstruct it to suit the reality of Baekje. In conclusion, this paper reveals that Baekje's selective appropriation of 『周禮』 served as a strategic language to justify institutional reform, strengthen the symbolism of the monarchy, and express Baekje's unique identity in East Asian political and cultural order.
