Control of nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux in non-erosive reflux disease with proton pump inhibitor and rebamipide combination therapy: results of a prospective randomized study
Abstract
Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of combination therapy with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and rebamipide compared to PPI monotherapy in controlling nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in patients with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), based on 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring in the nocturnal supine position. Patients and methods. This prospective randomized study included 39 patients with NERD. All patients were divided into two groups: the study group (n = 22) received omeprazole 20 mg/day and rebamipide 300 mg/day; the comparison group (n = 17) received omeprazole 20 mg/day. The duration of treatment was 4 weeks. Efficacy was assessed functionally using 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring before and after treatment, with analysis of nocturnal parameters in the supine position. Results. In the study group, the duration of the longest nocturnal GER episode decreased by 78% (p = 0.016), and there was a notable positive trend in the percentage of time with pH 5 minutes (p = 0.039) and a trend toward a difference in the change in the percentage of time with pH
