Abstract

Robert E. Booth Jr., MD 1945-2026The Jefferson Health orthopaedic community mourns the passing of Dr. Robert E. Booth Jr. He was a surgeon, educator, innovator, and humanitarian. His influence on knee arthroplasty and on the lives of patients and colleagues is immeasurable. Dr. Booth was widely regarded as one of the world’s leaders in total knee arthroplasty. Throughout his career, he restored mobility to thousands of patients. Dr. Booth possessed an unmatched level of expertise and compassion. He was known not only for surgical excellence but also for his clear commitment to his patients. A scholar and innovator at heart, Dr. Booth devoted his career to advancing orthopaedics. He helped to guide the field as a past president of The Knee Society and was honored with the Society’s research award 4 times. In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Booth also codesigned 5 total knee arthroplasty systems. Throughout his career, he mentored generations of surgeons, creating a legacy that will endure through those he taught. His commitment to service extended beyond his practice. As Director of 3B Orthopaedics at Jefferson Health in Pennsylvania, Dr. Booth led surgical teams on international medical missions to bring orthopaedic care to patients with limited access to health care. In Honduras, 5 teams collectively completed 62 joint replacements without complication or infection. Several of these patients had severe deformities that had gone untreated for years. Dr. Booth later continued this work in Panama and Nicaragua, bringing the same excellence and compassion to the patients in need there. Dr. Booth’s legacy is evident in more than just publications, implants, or titles. It lives in the steady steps of patients who once could not walk, in the hands of surgeons who were shaped by his mentorship, and in the culture of excellence and humanity that he helped to build at Jefferson and throughout orthopaedics. With his wife Kathy, Dr. Booth raised 3 wonderful children: Courtney, Robert, and Thomas. He was the proud grandparent of Robert, Taylor, Natalie, Eleanor, Catherine, and Sam, and father-in-law of Gus, Jessica, and Erin. We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Booth’s family, friends, and colleagues and to the countless patients whose lives he changed. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered. A.V.
