Perspectivas de investigación y gestión de sociedades científicas de estudiantes de medicina peruanas
Abstract
Objective: Describe the characteristics of organizational management, research activities, and perceived barriers of medical student scientific societies affiliated with SOCIMEP during the last quarter of 2024. Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study involving the 41 SOCEMs affiliated with SOCIMEP during the last quarter of 2024. A virtual survey was applied to their representatives, collecting data on organization, institutional support, academic activities, and scientific output. Descriptive analysis included absolute frequencies, means, and standard deviations. Results: Responses were obtained from 37 SOCEMs (90.2%). Of these, 64.86% had an advisory board and 91.89% collaborated with other SOCEMs. Only 18.92% received financial support. A total of 64.86% were conducting research projects and 54.05% had published in the last year. Individually, 66.67% of representatives had started extracurricular research, but only 33.33% published. Main needs identified were training in scientific writing (89.39%), research methodology (69.70%), and greater institutional and financial support. Conclusions: Peruvian SOCEMs show a high level of collaboration and interest in research, but face limitations in funding, mentoring, and scientific production. These gaps could affect their sustainability. It is a priority to strengthen their institutional structure, methodological training, and publication support to enhance the research training of medical students in Peru.
