Abstract

The review focuses on A.N. Kruglov’s monograph “Kant’s Philosophy in Russia”, which is a comprehensive study of early Russian Kantianism. The reviewer notes that Kruglov has undertaken an extensive reconstruction of the reception of Kant’s philosophy in Russia during the late 18th and mid-19th centuries, drawing on a wide range of archival and published sources. Special attention is paid to the first Russian translations of Kant’s works, the role of universities and theological academies in the dissemination of critical philosophy, as well as the contributions of key figures such as Melman, Odoevsky, Solovyov, Lopatin, and Trubetskoy. The book also explores the interpretation of Kant’s ideas by Russian Marxists. The reviewer highlights the impressive scope of the material covered in the book, which encompasses not only philosophical, but also cultural and historical contexts that reveal how Kant’s ideas were understood, reinterpreted, and transformed within the Russian intellectual tradition. At the same time, the author acknowledges the methodological challenges inherent in a project of such an encyclopedic scale: limited analysis of individual thinkers, uneven source material, and ambiguity in the criteria for including works within the Russian Kantian corpus. Despite these difficulties, Kruglov’s work is recognized as a valuable contribution – an ambitious and well-researched attempt to systematize the phenomenon of “Kant in Russia”, opening up new perspectives for future studies on the history of Russian reception of critical philosophy.
