Fatigue Analysis and Failure Prediction Model of Drill String and Drill pipe
Abstract
Abstract Drill strings are used in the oil industry to excavate and extract oil and gas from the ground. The drill string experiences a variety of loads throughout this operation, including axial, lateral, and torsional loads. Problems with drillstring/ drillpipe can impede operations, result in work downtime, and be expensive to replace. A mathematical model has been introduced to predict fatigue failure of a drill string. The model helps in replacing the drill string before it experiences any fatigue or failure issues, thereby avoiding additional expenses and delays. A testbed platform was specifically designed to investigate fatigue failure in the drill string. An experimental investigation was carried out to monitor the drill string deformation and vibration through strain and vibration sensors. The drill string was put through an experimental setup where it was subjected to axial, lateral, and torsional loads to gather data that can help predict drill string fatigue failure. This can significantly minimize downtime and reduce costs associated with drilling operations.
