Association Between ADHD Symptoms and Road Traffic Accidents: A Descriptive Study in a Tertiary Care Setting
Abstract
This descriptive study investigates the association between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) traits and road traffic accidents (RTAs) among participants attending a tertiary care centre in Davangere, India. A sample of 200 participants from psychiatry and neurosurgery departments was assessed using the ADHD-RS-IV scale. Results indicated that 10% of the participants had ADHD, while an additional 20% were likely to exhibit ADHD traits, with inattention symptoms more prevalent. Moreover, 45% of participants reported comorbid alcohol use, which showed a statistically significant association with RTAs. The findings emphasize the importance of screening for ADHD traits and substance use in individuals involved in RTAs to inform targeted interventions and improve road safety outcomes.
