Development of a real-time backup battery voltage and environmental monitoring system for a server room using IoT technology
Abstract
The server room must be maintained within standard temperature, humidity, and electrical limits at all times. A disturbance in any of these parameters can damage computers, network equipment, and critical hardware, leading to service interruption and system instability. Continuous monitoring is therefore essential to ensure operational continuity and prevent equipment malfunction. This research developed and validated a practical IoT-based prototype for real-time backup battery voltage and environmental monitoring to support server room operation. The prototype monitors backup battery voltage using threshold-based diagnostics together with temperature and humidity conditions. It consists of voltage, temperature, and humidity sensors and a NodeMCU ESP32 microcontroller, which processes the sensor data and sends them via Wi-Fi to an LCD and the Blynk application. The system automatically issues alerts when abnormal conditions occur. The prototype was evaluated under controlled server room conditions to assess measurement accuracy and alert responsiveness. The findings confirmed accurate measurement of all parameters. Humidity readings varied by only 0.10% RH, and alert detection occurred within 1.6 ± 0.7 s in 98% of cases. The proposed solution enhanced operational stability and enabled timely preventive actions in an actual server room environment. Overall, IoT-based real-time monitoring enhances operational reliability and environmental management in server room operations. The integration of voltage-based battery monitoring, environmental sensing, and wireless alert notifications provides early detection of abnormal conditions and supports preventive maintenance decisions under the tested conditions
