Abstract

This paper interrogates educational opportunities for early childhood development (ECD) learners in high-density schools in Gweru Urban District in Zimbabwe. While Zimbabwe has developed and implemented policies to achieve Education for All (EFA) goals, one of them being to universalize the quality of ECD education, we argue that more opportunities still need to be availed for learners in high-density school-run centres. The research was conducted using a qualitative methodology rooted in the interpretive paradigm. The study used observations, interviews and document analysis for data collection. Twelve ECD facilitators and four administrators were purposively sampled to participate in the study. For data analysis we developed concepts and then categorized them according to themes, concepts and similar features. The study was informed by Bourdiue’s Cultural Capital theory and related Marxist ideas. The findings revealed that while most ECD centres in high-density schools are manned by professional care-givers, the ECD classes have high teacher-pupil ratios which is contrary to statutory instrument 106 of 2005 that stipulates that ECD classes must operate on a teacher-pupil ratio of 1:20. Furthermore, the study established that both indoor and outdoor equipment was inadequate in most of the centres and teachers had to rely on their resourcefulness to ensure that alternative learning resources were available. The major recommendation of the study was that high density schools should leverage on community cultural wealth to enhance the educational opportunities for ECD learners. Educators should embrace students' diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences so as to create more inclusive learning environments that support the academic success and well-being of all students.
