Soft Power and International Politics the Role of Soft Power in Indias Foreign Policy from 1990 to 2022
Abstract

This study investigates the role of soft power in India’s foreign policy, tracing its evolution, mechanisms, and impacts between 1990 and 2022. It examines how India has strategically employed cultural diplomacy, political values, economic influence, technological outreach, and humanitarian aid to enhance its global standing and shape international perceptions. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, combining historical analysis with thematic exploration, to provide a comprehensive understanding of India’s soft power trajectory.

The conceptual framework builds on Joseph Nye’s theory of soft power, contrasting it with hard power and engaging with alternative perspectives that critique or expand upon Nye’s ideas. Through an in-depth analysis of India’s foreign policy, the study identifies the core components of its soft power strategy and evaluates their effectiveness in addressing misconceptions and fostering cooperation. A case study of humanitarian aid highlights India’s efforts to project itself as a responsible global actor, comparing its initiatives with those of other nations to assess their strategic and diplomatic impact.

The findings reveal that India’s soft power has significantly contributed to its international relationships, strengthening alliances and enhancing geopolitical influence. However, challenges such as resource limitations, competing narratives, and domestic constraints complicate the effective implementation of these strategies. The research concludes by emphasizing the importance of cultural diplomacy and humanitarian engagement in India’s global outreach, while offering strategic recommendations to maximize the potential of soft power in the evolving international landscape.

Ultimately, the study argues that India’s deliberate use of soft power has played a pivotal role in advancing its foreign policy objectives, reinforcing its reputation, and positioning it as a key actor in global politics.
