Redesignig Internal Control Architecture in the Digital Era -Tech Adoption, Friction Points and Remedial Design Choices
Abstract
Digital banks operate as continuously evolving technology platforms, yet they remain subject to control architectures designed for static, monolithic financial institutions with infrequent change cycles. This article examines the fundamental friction between traditional banking control frameworks-structured around periodic assurance, sequential approval gates, and the Three Lines of Defence-and the operational reality of digital banks characterized by continuous deployment, distributed ownership, and platform-based architectures. The paper argues that digital banks often fail not from absence of controls, but from control misdesign: overlay mechanisms that create compliance overlays that leads to delayed recognition of real-time risks embedded in code, APIs, and cloud infrastructure.
