Abstract

Large Language Model (LLM) based agents represent one of the most significant technological shifts in artificial intelligence, promising to transform how humans interact with computational systems. This comprehensive survey examines the current state, emerging trends, and future trajectories of LLM Agent development. Drawing from extensive research across 329+ publications and industry reports, we analyze the technological foundations, architectural patterns, market dynamics, and application domains of these autonomous systems. Our analysis reveals that the global AI Agent market is projected to grow from $5.43 billion in 2024 to $47.1 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 44.8%. The emergence of Agentic AI as the top trend in Gartner's 2025 Technology Forecast underscores the strategic importance of this technology. We identify key developments in multi-agent architectures, tool-use capabilities, and memory systems while discussing the persistent challenges in reliability, safety, and evaluation frameworks. This survey provides researchers and practitioners with a holistic understanding of the LLM Agent landscape and its implications for the future of artificial intelligence.
