The ETF Paradox: Re-evaluating Bitcoin as "Digital Gold" in the Era of Institutional Integration (2020-2026)
Abstract
This study examines the evolution of Bitcoin's risk-return profile over a six-year horizon (2020-2026), testing the "Digital Gold" hypothesis against three distinct macroeconomic regimes: the Pandemic Liquidity Surge, the 2022 Quantitative Tightening, and the Post-2024 Institutional Era. Utilizing quantile regression and structural break testing, we find that while Bitcoin has delivered exceptional annualized returns of 61.24%, it remains a pro-cyclical risk asset rather than a safe haven. A Chow Test (p = 0.7815) indicates that the launch of Spot Bitcoin ETFs did not fundamentally alter Bitcoin's pricing relationship with equities. During market crashes (10th quantile), Bitcoin exhibits a persistent beta of 1.25 to the S&P 500, whereas Gold remains effectively decoupled (0.097). We conclude that Bitcoin serves as "Digital Alpha," a powerful diversifier for growth, but fails the essential criteria for a sovereign-grade hedge or "Digital Gold.
