Decision Fatigue in Military Operations: Cognitive Challenges, Performance Impacts, and Mitigation Strategies
Abstract
Decision fatigue represents a critical challenge in military environments, where personnel are required to make rapid, high-stakes decisions under persistent stress, sleep deprivation, and information overload. The cumulative impact of these operational demands can erode cognitive resources, leading to diminished decision quality, increased error rates, and compromised mission outcomes. This essay forms part of a broader project investigating AI-assisted literature synthesis across multiple domains of decision fatigue. Preliminary literature reviews were generated using a specialized scientific AI system (Science42; DORA / Insilico Medicine) and subsequently consolidated into structured essays with ChatGPT, followed by human validation. This essay synthesizes current research on the conceptual foundations of decision fatigue, its measurement and assessment in military populations, and the operational factors that exacerbate cognitive strain. It further explores the consequences for individual and team performance, highlighting the interplay between fatigue, resilience, and communication. Mitigation strategies, including psychological training, structured rest, and the integration of decision support technologies such as AI, are discussed as promising approaches to preserve cognitive readiness and enhance operational effectiveness. Interdisciplinary perspectives from healthcare, law enforcement, and aviation provide additional context, underscoring the universal relevance of decision fatigue and the need for tailored interventions. The findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive fatigue management programs, robust leadership, and ongoing research to refine theoretical models and develop effective countermeasures. Future directions include the advancement of biomathematical models, improved assessment tools, and the responsible deployment of emerging technologies to support decision-making in complex, high-pressure military settings.
