Are We Currently Experiencing the Fifth Industrial Revolution? The Case for Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Every Industrial Revolution in recorded history has been characterised by a singular enabling technology that restructured labour markets, reorganised production systems, and permanently altered the social and institutional architecture of society. This article advances the thesis that Artificial Intelligence (AI), encompassing large language models, generative AI systems, and autonomous agents that emerged in mature form between approximately 2017 and 2026, constitutes the defining technological catalyst of a Fifth Industrial Revolution. Drawing on historical analyses of prior industrial transitions, primary and peer-reviewed empirical literature, and current enterprise adoption data, the argument proceeds in four stages: (1) a definitional framework for what constitutes an industrial revolution is established from the historical record; (2) the four prior revolutions are mapped against this framework; (3) AI is evaluated against each criterion; and (4) the critical distinction between Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, a frequently conflated debate in both academic and practitioner discourse is resolved. The analysis concludes that AI meets every historical threshold for revolutionary classification and that this transition is not approaching but already underway.
