Nonlinear TM Wave Reflection from an Absorbing Kerr Medium: Perturbation Analysis and Bistability
Abstract
We study the reflection of a transverse-magnetic (TM) plane wave from a semi-infinite Kerr medium with linear absorption. Using the Krylov--Bogoliubov--Mitropolsky averaging method adapted to coupled TM fields, we develop a multiple-scale perturbation expansion that treats absorption exactly in the zero-order solution and the Kerr nonlinearity as a perturbation. This yields slow-flow equations for the amplitude and phase inside the medium. As a lossless benchmark, we also derive an exact parametric solution for TM waves (generalizing Kaplan's scalar theory) valid for arbitrary incident angle and any linear permittivity $\varepsilon_1$, including cases where $\beta^2 = \varepsilon_1\sin^2\theta_0 > 1$. Matching the internal field to the incident and reflected waves gives a first-order parametric expression for the reflection coefficient in terms of the internal field amplitude $X = h_0(0)$. The lossless benchmark recovers the three characteristic regimes (two Brewster dips, bistable loop, $\tau$-shaped coexistence). The perturbative solution provides a foundation for future numerical studies of absorption effects in realistic material platforms.
