Abstract

The rapid growth of urbanization and infrastructure development has led to a significant increase in construction and demolition (C&D) waste worldwide, posing serious environmental, economic, and social challenges. The accumulation of large volumes of discarded concrete, masonry, and other construction materials has intensified pressure on landfill capacity while simultaneously accelerating the depletion of natural aggregates and raw materials. Sustainable reuse of C&D waste materials in structural concrete systems presents a viable pathway to reduce landfill dependency, conserve natural resources, and enhance the overall resilience and sustainability of the built environment. This research paper investigates the potential of incorporating recycled aggregates, recycled concrete fines, masonry waste, and supplementary recycled binders derived from C&D waste into structural concrete applications. Emphasis is placed on evaluating mechanical performance, durability characteristics, environmental impact reduction, and structural resilience under both service level conditions and extreme loading scenarios. A comprehensive methodology integrating detailed material characterization, optimized concrete mix design strategies, and systematic performance evaluation is presented to ensure structural reliability and consistency. The study also considers the influence of recycled material quality, replacement ratios, and processing techniques on concrete behavior. The findings indicate that when C&D waste materials are properly processed, graded, and proportioned, structural concrete can achieve satisfactory strength, durability, and deformation capacity comparable to conventional concrete. Moreover, the integration of recycled materials contributes to reduced embodied energy and carbon emissions, reinforcing the role of recycled concrete in resilient and sustainable building systems.
