Abstract

ABSTRACT Stress beyond syllable boundaries: V-to-V coarticulation and µ-gesture in ItalianThis paper aims at investigating the articulatory effects of stress beyond the boundaries of the stressed syllable in Italian.Articulatory studies have shown that stress affects the realization of articulatory gestures by making them larger, longer, and faster; these effects are not limited to the stressed vowels but spill over neighbouring sounds.Previous investigations of Italian have attested the presence of such modulations in post-tonic consonants; we extend these observations to more peripheral sounds, i.e. transconsonantal vowels, and we investigate how stress affects the degree and the direction of V-to-V coarticulation. Our findings show a lesser degree of V-to-V coarticulation when one of the vowels is stressed. This is the result of the gestural score of the stressed vowel and its effect on the adjacent consonants, both before and after the vowel. The findings are discussed within the framework of the μ-gesture model in Articulatory Phonology.
