Sialendoscopy impact on Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis
Abstract
Background: Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is an unsupportive inflammation characterized by repeated incidents of unilateral painful parotid salivary gland swelling. It has been recorded that sialoendoscopy has been proven as an effective diagnostic and management modality.Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of sialendoscopy as a diagnostic/management modality in unilateral Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP).Patients and method: A prospective observational study of 14 children, with unilateral JRP, whom met the inclusion diagnostic criteria, and they pre-operatively assessed via sonography or computed tomography (CT) scanning, then followed firstly by diagnostic sialendoscopy for existence of stenosis, or sludge, and stones within its duct even in the gland itself, then followed with therapeutic sialendoscopic technique without cortico-steroid infusion. Results: Males (64.28%), females (35.72%), mean age 10.64± 1.23 SD, unilateral lesion (100%), S2 grade ductal stenosis (50%), S3 grade stenosis (28.57%), while S4 (21.42%), the mean depth was 62.47 ± 12.3 mm. Complete absence (92.86%), recurrence (7.14%), with statically significant difference as P value= 0.0001, mean number of acute episodes before the sialendoscopy was 1.89 ±3.67 SD, while at 6 months post-operatively was 0.13 ±0.24 SD, intra-operative complications (7.14%) of procedures, and, no post-operative complications, Overall assessments were 4.78±6.93 pre-operatively, then became 0.13±0.24 at 6 months post-operative.Conclusions: Sialendoscopy was significantly effective as a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic tool for the treatment of juvenile recurrent parotitis.
