Efficacy of application of mitomycin c and triamcinolone in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy
Abstract
Background: The punctum and canaliculus make up the proximal portion of the lacrimal drainage system, while the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct make up the distal portion. A common and often distressing issue in adults is the blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, which leads to epiphora and lacrimal discharge. Aim: In cases of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction, the effectiveness of adjuvant intranasal packing of triamcinolone and mitomycin C in endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy will be compared. Subjects and methods: The forty-patients who visited the outpatient clinic at Al-Azhar University Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt, between May 1, 2023 and May 1, 2025 were the subjects of this prospective study. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the success rates of the different groups. In group A, 9 cases (90%) were reported as anatomical successes, while in group B, 1 case (10%) was reported as a failure. In group C, 10 cases (100%) were reported as successes, while in group D, 5 cases (50%) were reported as failures. Conclusion: The combined use of Mitomycin C and Triamcinolone demonstrated the highest anatomical success and the lowest complication rates, particularly reducing granulation tissue formation. These findings proved that adjunctive use of these agents enhance surgical outcomes and reduce postoperative complications in patients undergoing EN-DCR.
