Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness (MIDD): An Advanced and Comprehensive Review
Abstract
Background: Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness (MIDD) represent a distinct and profoundly impactful form of monogenic diabetes, often under-recognized and consequently mismanaged. Objective: This advanced review aims to provide an exhaustive analysis of MIDD, encompassing its intricate molecular pathogenesis, the extensive spectrum of its clinical manifestations. Methods: It stands apart from the more common Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes due to its singular genetic etiology: mutations within the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Results: This condition manifests as a characteristic syndromic cluster of diabetes and sensorineural hearing loss, frequently accompanied by a variable array of multi-systemic complications. the diagnostic imperative of genetic confirmation, and current management strategies, all grounded firmly in established scientific and clinical evidence. Conclusion: Enhanced clinical vigilance and a profound understanding of MIDD are paramount for early, accurate diagnosis, personalized therapeutic interventions, and comprehensive genetic counseling for affected individuals and their families.
