النموذج البنائى للعلاقات السببية بين تنظيم الذات والتجول العقلي والتدفق النفسى والتسويف الاكاديمى لدى طلاب الدراسات العليا - The structural model of causal relationships betweenSelf-Regulation, Mind-Wandering, Psychological Flow, and Academic Procrastination Among Postgraduate students
Abstract
Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the roles of self-regulation, mind-wandering, and psychological flow in predicting academic procrastination, and to verify the structural model of the causal relationships among these variables, considering mind-wandering and psychological flow as mediating variables. The research also aimed to examine gender differences in the study variables among a sample of postgraduate students from Cairo, Ain Shams and Helwan Universities, consisting of 274 postgraduate students (41 males and 233 females) from Cairo, Ain Shams, and Helwan Universities, with a mean age of 27.93 years (SD = ±8.60).The research employed several instruments: the Self-Regulation Scale (developed by the researcher), the Mind-Wandering Scale (Abdel-Sadeq, 2024), the Psychological Flow Scale (El-Amrousy, 2025), and the Academic Procrastination Scale (developed by the researcher). Results revealed that self-regulation significantly predicted academic procrastination, while both spontaneous mind-wandering and psychological flow also contributed to its prediction. A statistically significant positive direct path was found between self-regulation and psychological flow, and statistically significant negative direct paths were found between self-regulation and both spontaneous mind-wandering and academic procrastination. Additionally, psychological flow had a significant negative direct effect on academic procrastination, whereas spontaneous mind-wandering had a positive direct effect. Furthermore, self-regulation exerted a significant negative indirect effect on academic procrastination through psychological flow. Gender differences were found in self-regulation scores (favoring males) and in academic procrastination scores (favoring females), while no significant gender differences appeared in psychological flow or in either type of mind-wandering (spontaneous or deliberate). Keywords: Causal modeling – Self-regulation – Mind-wandering – Psychological flow – Academic procrastination.
