Maxillary Molar Periodontitis and Sinus Mucosal Thickening: A Retrospective CBCT Study
Abstract
Background: Periodontal and periapical infections can cause the frequent maxillary sinus ailment known as "odontogenic sinusitis. Its development is associated with alveolar bone loss (ABL) and periodontal disease. Using CBCT, the present study explored the association between maxillary sinus mucosal thickening (MT) and ABL in patients with varying severities of periodontitis. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 200 maxillary sinuses using CBCT imaging. Measurements included maxillary sinus mucosal thickness (MT), alveolar bone level (ABL), and the distance between root apices and the maxillary sinus floor (DMSF). MT values were recorded and analyzed with regard to the degree of ABL and DMSF to assess potential correlations.Result: MT increased progressively with ABL severity. The MT showed a significant difference between the three studied groups, while no significant difference was detected in the DMSF. Conclusion: MT is influenced by the severity of ABL. Variability in previous reports may reflect the lack of comprehensive clinical data in retrospective studies. Integrating radiographic and clinical assessments is necessary for adequate diagnosis and effective management of odontogenic sinusitis.
