The Effect of Eccentric Training on Improving the Performance Level of the 3000-Meter Run in Long-Distance Runners
Abstract
The Effect of Eccentric Training on Improving the Performance Level of the 3000-Meter Run in Long-Distance Runners The aim of this study was to examine the effect of eccentric contraction training using the K-Box device on improving the performance level of the 3000-meter run in long-distance runners, in view of the high prevalence of lower-limb injuries resulting from repetitive running on hard surfaces and the associated mechanical stress on muscles, joints, and tendons. An experimental design based on a one-group pre-test and post-test method was adopted. The sample was purposively selected from long-distance runners of the Military Institution registered with the Egyptian Athletics Federation. The main sample consisted of ten runners aged fourteen to sixteen years. A preventive training program based on eccentric overload training using the K-Box device was applied for eight weeks, with four training sessions per week during the special preparation period. Data collection included measuring the performance time of the 3000-meter run, in addition to a set of physical fitness tests related to endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and speed endurance. The validity and reliability of the tests were established through a pilot study conducted before the main experiment. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS software, employing descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests to identify significant differences between measurements. The results showed statistically significant improvements in the post-test compared with the pre-test in the performance level of the 3000-meter run. These improvements indicate the effectiveness of eccentric contraction training using the K-Box device. Such improvements are attributed to increased muscular strength, improved neuromuscular efficiency, enhanced muscular coordination, and reduced mechanical stress on the lower-limb muscles during running. It was concluded that eccentric contraction training is an effective approach for improving performance and reducing lower-limb injury risk in long-distance runners within structured athletic training programs.
