Comparative Electrophoretical Study of Sarcoplasmic Protein of Three Fish Species from Bardawil Lagoon: A Tool for Ecological Assessment
Abstract
Bighead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were collected from Bardawil Lake. The dorsal muscle protein was fractionated by 7.5% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and the differences were statistically shown according to the sexual difference in the same species and among the three species. The studied species revealed both conserved and species-specific protein banding patterns, with 15 consistent fractions observed across all species. Notable interspecific variations in their appearance were noted in fractions of 6, 8, 9 and 12. The mobility and density of specific fractions – particularly fractions #2, 4, 10, and 11 – highlight the influence of environmental conditions, dietary habits, and physiological states on protein expression. Different fractions detected marked significant differences between the three species. In addition, sex was recorded with an impact on the protein profile of each species.
