A comprehensive performance analysis of drum brakes versus disc brakes.
Abstract
Vehicles are one of the most important inventions because they are used to transport goods and passengers. The brake system is the most important component of a vehicle because it ensures the vehicle's safety, its passengers, and their belongings. The brake system performs critical functions, such as stopping the vehicle in the shortest possible distance, stabilizing it, and maintaining its stability while driving. To perform these functions, the brake system converts kinetic energy to thermal energy. Vehicles use two types of wheel brakes: drum brakes and disc brakes. Given the importance of this system, it is critical to investigate the performance of both types of brakes. This paper describes the materials used in disc and drum brakes and compares their performance under the same conditions. The results show that disc brakes outperform drum brakes, owing to their higher cooling rate. Additionally, disc brakes have an average power that is 15% to 17% higher than drum brakes. Additionally, disc brakes have an average braking power that is 15-17% higher than drum brakes, meaning they convert kinetic energy into thermal energy at a higher rate during braking
